How to Make Your Jiu Jitsu Better?

March 14, 2016 By Insight BJJ

85d7560362f14e9a45ce38a12beb7064Every BJJ practitioner wants to better their game, right? For that matter every musician, accountant and rodeo clown probably feels the same way. So what’s the secret to getting better at BJJ (or anything else?) As the old joke goes, (Q:) “Excuse me, sir. How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” (A:) “Practice, practice, practice.“

No matter your reason for training Jiu Jitsu – exercise, competition, self-defense – you’ll see the improvement of your skills are directly correlated with the amount of mat time you get. If you come only once per week or less, you most likely notice you’re getting passed up by the folks who are coming 3-6 times per week. To really retain what you’ve learned, you should be shooting for a minimum of 3 classes per week. More if you can manage it. This is most important if your goal is self-defense. You need these techniques to be second nature.

If you’re coming less than once per week, you’re not getting what you can from BJJ. Sure, you’ll learn something, but the chances of successfully using the techniques you’ve learned in a real situation or competition are greatly diminished.

If you’re considering trying out our school, take a look at our schedule to see what classes work for you. www.bjjsinsight.com/schedule

I was traveling from out of town this week and called Insight to see if I could get some mat time in between Brenham/La... Grange before a tournament in a few months. Coach Peterson was incredibly accommodating. First impression was what a welcoming and friendly place to train, not to mention spotlessly clean. Open mat had great turnout and I got some really good coaching advice during the classes. Coach Peterson is calm, relaxed, positive, technical. He explains things clearly and takes time with the students to work through combinations. The people at the gym I had the opportunity to roll with were all relaxed, good natured, and tough competitors. Enjoyed the focused, positive training community. What a great grappling/jiujitsu resource if you’re in or around Brenham/La Grange. Appreciate you for making the time this week, Coach. Can’t thank you enough.read more

Becoming a member of this gym has definitely been one of the best things my husband and I have done. Class size is... often very small, nice and personable. The instructors are all amazing, helping you perfect technique and helping guide you into new techniques as well. I love the comradery, everyone willing to help each other become better at the sport. Lots of fun and a great workout!read more
